The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) was established in 1999 and is located on a 21-acre park in the heart of downtown Scottsdale area. The park features exquisite landscaping and is home to a variety of sculptures, fountains, and other works of art. The Museum, which focuses on cultures all over the world, is an important cultural hub for the Southwest, drawing in people from all over the world.
SMoCA’s minimalist building (a creative and well-designed renovation of a previously known movie theater) was designed by award-winning architect Will Bruder and features four galleries for displaying temporary exhibitions and works from the Museum’s permanent collection as well as SMoCA Lounge, a living, functional art installation and space for community engagement.
Lectures, readings, performances, docent-led tours, workshops, and classes on topics like Arizona and global politics, Japanese flower arranging, the science of optics, piata-making, and the latest ideas about food production and distribution are just a few of the many educational programs and special events put on by the Museum for adults and families.
An outdoor sculpture park at SMoCA is home to Scrim Wall, a huge curtain of translucent glass panels by James Carpenter Design Associates, and Knight Rise, one of the famous artist James Turrell’s public skyspaces.
The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art regularly partners with local and international organizations. The museum has received funding from organizations such as Arizona State University, the City of Scottsdale, the Warhol Foundation, the Phoenix Art Museum, the Graham Foundation, and the Tremaine Foundation. During its existence, the Museum has benefited from the contributions of tens of thousands of people, organizations, and businesses who have provided time, resources, expertise, and enthusiasm.
Shop@SMoCA is the museum’s gift shop, where you can find unique presents for any occasion, including modern jewelry, books on art and architecture, and reproductions of museum exhibits.
The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is a strong advocate for visual arts’ vitality, inventiveness, and experimentation. They hope to grow and inform the audience for contemporary art while also giving back to the artistic community on a global scale. By testing out novel curatorial methods and emphasizing cultural context, SMoCA creates an unforgettable encounter with art, architecture, and design. Artworks in various genres are interpreted, shown, collected, and preserved by this group.
